Single Boy's Breakfast
My Spam Pie recipe seemed to be very popular--lots of people looked at it--don't know if anyone had the guts to make it! But that recipe got me to thinking about a book my brother gave my dad as a joke one year. I was fascinated by it and it is currently in my home--my dad has never missed it.
"White Trash Cooking" is not just a cookbook. Oh, no. The photographs, the commentary, the names: this is a work of social and historic significance. It affords us a peek into a way of life that will soon be gone.

The recipe that has stuck in my mind since the first time I looked at this book is presented for you here today, as originally written.
Single Boy's Breakfast
Take one pound of pork sausages. Cook them evenly, pour off fat. Add one and one half box soda crakers (unsalted) crumbled. Pour in one cup of boiling water. Cover tight and steam five minutes. Serve with fried sweet potatoes and plenty of hot, black coffee.
Now, if this recipe appeals to you, you might try a second helping:

There are sequels? I have the first White Trash Cooking and it's really not a bad cookbook. Of course, I was born in South Carolina...
I highly recommend the peach pie recipe, especially if you use peaches picked from the tree in your granny's back yard :)
